SUMMARY
In a nutshell, Ghoststar is what you would expect a ShadowClan cat to be. He's cruel, wily, proud, and perfectly at home with the dark. However, if you look a little closer, Ghoststar is a bit more complicated.
To the outside world, Ghoststar is stuck up, harsh, and completely uncaring. However, Ghoststar lets other cats see very little of his true self. To be perfectly truthful, Ghoststar, for all his big talk, has a very fragile self esteem. He hides this of course. Ghoststar cannot imagine what it would be like if the other clans found out that he had fears. So, to protect himself, he covers up in a mask of icy loyalty to ShadowClan.
Besides his hidden flaws, Ghoststar is a wonderful leader. He is very charismatic. He has a gift for rallying large groups of cats to his side. His leadership skills are only matched by his fighting skills. He's good at making the split second decisions that the battle field requires (which sometimes gets him into trouble.)
Ghoststar enjoys a challenge. This is why he likes Leafbare. He is strong and fit with a thick fluffy coat, so when he brings home the most prey during a winter storm, it begins to help him gain the confidence he shows to the outside world.
Ghoststar thrives on attention and acceptance. He is feared by many, and respected by an even larger number. Without this, I'm afraid he would be an entirely useless leader. He never has really grown out of that phase where you need to check everything that you do, to make sure it's right.
Ghoststar does not give trust easily. He is not a soft hearted ThunderClan cat, who gives friendship to any cat who happens to be passing by! No, Ghoststar's respect and friendship must be earned! Earned by faithfulness and dedication.
All in all, Ghoststar is what ShadowClan needs. A strong leader who doesn't take it from anybody. Ghoststar knows what's his and he will fight to defend it. Despite his selfishness and self consciousness, he really does care for ShadowClan, and would do almost anything for it.

HISTORY
His past is not great, but it's nothing a big tough ShadowClan leader can't handle. Unfortunately, this is not the story of three happy go lucky kittens growing up to be leader, deputy, and medicine cat. It's the story of how jealousy can turn the hearts if good cats, and ruin a lovely thing.
Ghoststar's history begins, and ends, with his brother. Ghostkit was the first born, shortly followed by Mousekit, and then Sagekit. Ghostkit was the strongest, Mousekit the smartest, and Sagekit the fastest. What a trio! 'They are born for greatness!' Ghostkit's mother used to brag. However, Ghostkit already had feelings of self doubt stirring within him. In his eyes, Mousekit was the best! The bravest! The one with all the ideas! In Mousekit's mind, the same uncertain thoughts bubbled beneath the surface.
It was there that a bitter rivalry began. The two brothers strove to best each other. Poor Sagekit was always in the middle. Acting as a go between. The poor fragile kitten could hardly stand to see her brothers so spiteful. The parents where clueless. "Every body needs some friendly competition!" His father would say, cuffing his sons playfully on the ears.
As they grew, the void grew. Each brother went their own way, and the poor sister was left to wonder how such lovely cats could be so uncaring.
When they became apprentices things got worse. Ghostpaw was given to a power hungry, battle happy warrior. This warrior cultivated the rivalry between the two brothers. Ghostpaw did not for a second doubt his course. He was going to be leader, and he was going to beat his brother to it.
Just as Newleaf blossoms into Greenleaf, Sagepaw flowered into a lovely young she-cat, earning the name Sageheart. Ghostpaw grew into a fearsome young tom, earning the name Ghostclaw, and Mousepaw became a fiery young warrior called Mousewhisker. They proceeded to do what warriors did. Sageheart settled down and had kits, Mousewhisker became a wonderful hunter, and Ghostclaw grew more dangerous by the day.
The choice was very popular when Ghostclaw became deputy. Everyone had been expecting it. Mousewhisker sighed, and resigned himself to defeat. Sageheart smiled, hoping that this meant the end of her brothers quarrels. But Ghostclaw was not finished. He wasn't done with the fight until he was Ghoststar.
Sageheart had more kits, sadly, on her third litter there was some trouble birthing and she did not survive. Shocked and horrified, Ghostclaw felt as if the world was slipping away from him. His sister had been beautiful, talented, and sweet natured. Mousewhisker was equally distraught. It was this tragic event that caused the two brothers to bury the hatchet. "It's what she would have wanted." Mousewhisker had said gruffly.
The scars of rivalry went to deep for the brothers to become friends again, but they were polite to each other and when Ghostclaw finally achieved his ambition and became Ghoststar, Mousewhisker was the first to welcome him by his new name.
